Why 'Game of Thrones' Isn't Nominated at the 2017 Emmy Awards

The pressure on HBO to find a show that replicates the success of "Game of Thrones" will only get more intense now. Even though the drama and comedy series categories list seven nominees, the tsunami of new shows, particularly on streaming services and cable, indicated these two veterans might be squeezed out.

House of Cards, The Crown and Stranger Things were all nominated for outstanding drama series while Master of None and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt received nods for outstanding comedy series. Then Malek toppled heavy hitters such as Bob Odenkirk, Matthew Rhys, Liev Schreiber, and Kevin Spacey, all of whom are back in the category again this year. With an average viewership of 11.7 million per episode, the sci-fi drama series was also a critics' favorite and widely discussed in fan forums.

Rather unsurprising for fans of either show, HBO's Westworld and Netflix's Stranger Things are now leading the Emmy nominations for this year.

Five-time Emmy victor John Lithgow received his 12th nomination, three-time Emmy victor Jessica Lange received another nomination for "FEUD: Bette and Joan", while first-time Emmy nominees in the Limited Series or Movie categories included Robert De Niro, Carrie Coon and Reese Witherspoon.

The Best Supporting Actress in a Drama contenders are Uzo Aduba for Orange is the New Black, Millie Bobby Brown for Stranger Things, Ann Dowd for The Handmaid's Tale, Chrissy Metz for This is Us, Thandie Newton for Westworld and Samira Wiley for The Handmaid's Tale. Altogether, "SNL" earned 22 nominations, tying it for the most with "Westworld".
