Multiple fatality crash closes part of I-65 near Bowling Green

The pileup occurred Thursday night on Interstate 65 near Bowling Green when a tractor-trailer slammed into a passenger vehicle, Kentucky State Police said.

Master Trooper Jeremy Hodges, spokesman for the Kentucky State Police Bowling Green post, said a commercial vehicle and two passenger vehicles behind it were stopped in the right lane due to congestion.

KSP units arrived on scene at around 11:15 p.m.

Hodges said a preliminary investigation shows that the collision occurred in an area where road construction was underway and the interstate merges from three lanes to two.

A detour has been set up - redirecting people from Exit 28 N to 31-W.

All lanes of I-65 were reopened before 7 a.m.

We will continue to update this story as it develops. The semi-truck struck a passenger vehicle, which was stationary in the right lane of travel, causing a chain reaction collision involving one additional passenger vehicle and one additional commercial vehicle.

One tractor-trailer driver was treated at a hospital and released, and the other wasn't injured, Hodges said.

After an initial press release, two updates followed, but as of the latest one just before 9 a.m., two of the deceased individuals still had not been identified.

Authorities had not yet released the name of the sixth person who died. Kentucky State Police confirm there are multiple fatalities. It happened in a road building area where the highway narrows from three lanes to two lanes, police said. Another northbound commercial vehicle failed to stop and struck the last auto in line triggering the chain reaction.
