Rosneft says Sistema shares "arrested" to guarantee fair dispute resolution

Companies in Ukraine and Russian Federation came under attack from hackers who planted a virus that locked computers at energy and transport companies, banks and state bodies.

A court on Tuesday announced a halt in the case between Rosneft and Sistema - owned by tycoon Vladimir Yevtushenkov - until July 12.

The Petya virus has also attacked the Ukrainian government, Auchan Hypermarkets, Privatbank and telecommunication operators, the Group-IB company said.

"It initially appeared to be a variant of a piece of ransomware that emerged previous year", said computer scientist Prof Alan Woodward.

In a statement posted on its official Twitter account, Rosneft said its server was the target of a "powerful hacker", adding it was wary of a possible connection to a legal proceeding involving the company.

The cyberattack targeted a number of oil, telecommunications and financial companies in Russian Federation and Ukraine, blocking computers and demanding 300 US dollars in bitcoins, Group-IB told Russia's Prime news agency. Ukraine's Central Bank warned on its website that several banks had been attacked by hackers.

Ukrainian utility Kievenergo switched off all computers after its system was hacked, while another power company, Ukrenergo, was also affected, though "not seriously", the Interfax news service reported.

The Novaya Pochta private delivery company has suspended its activities due to a computer virus.

Also, Antonov aircraft-builder, the Kiev metro and Borispol global airport have confirmed cyber-attacks on their computer systems.

An increasing number of companies from different countries including Denmark and the Netherlands are joining the victim list, according to media reports and social media posts.
