Mueller and Comey not as close as Trump and others suggest

On Tuesday, Mueller met with the leaders of the House Intelligence Committee who are also conducting an investigation along with the Senate on the possible collusion of Trump campaign aides with Russian officials, separate from the FBI.

Comey admitted earlier this month, in sworn testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, that he had leaked a memorandum of a conversation with President Donald Trump with the deliberate intention of prompting the appointment of a special counsel to investigate Russia's interference with the 2016 election.

"There has been no collusion - there has been leaking by Comey", he told "Fox and Friends".

Trump also tweets that he has "no idea" whether other "tapes" or recordings exist.

However, Schiff said Thursday that Trump's tweet alone would not be enough, and that he had more questions, including whether the President was trying to threaten Comey with his May 17 tweet.

Trump first tweeted in May following Comey's removal that the veteran lawman had "better hope that there are no "tapes" of their conversations.

In an interview broadcast on Fox News Channel's "Fox &Friends" Friday, Trump repeated that he never made tapes, but added that when Comey "found out that I, you know, that there may be tapes out there, whether it's governmental tapes or anything else, and who knows, I think his story may have changed".

Mr Spicer said at a news briefing that the administration would respond.

The former Federal Bureau of Investigation director has only offered his story publicly once, in testimony before the Senate intelligence committee, although his associates provided some details to the news media before that. Mr Trump has seized on that statement as vindication, though the investigation continues, as do congressional inquiries.

Meanwhile, the head of the US House of Representatives' Russia investigation said today he wanted a formal response from Mr Trump to a request for records about conversations with Mr Comey.

The resulting news reports built pressure on a top justice department official to appoint an independent prosecutor to oversee the Russian Federation investigation.

The objective of the special counsel's meeting with members of Congress was to make sure that neither of the committee's investigations conflicted with his. It appears that Trump's description of the two as "very, very good friends" isn't rooted in reality.
