Ron Howard: I've been around Star Wars from the beginning

The Star Wars Han Solo standalone film'd recent bit of turbulence isn't over.

The Inferno filmmaker has stepped in to take over the project - which focuses on the origins of the Rebel Alliance leader, played by Alden Ehrenreich - after Phil Lord and Christopher Miller stepped away earlier this week due to "creative differences", despite having already started filming. They were dealing with "extreme scheduling constraints", a source says, and "were never given enough days for each scene from the very beginning". "(Hiring a coach is not unusual; hiring one that late in production is.) Lord and Miller suggested writer-director Maggie Kiley, who worked with them on 21 Jump Street". Ron Howard is a fairly uninspired choice to replace him, and I wonder how they are going to change so much footage around to fit their new narrative.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lucasfilm made a decision to hire an acting coach for Ehrenreich late into the film's production, with the intent of getting a better performance from the leading man. Kasdan is said also to have been unhappy with the limited shots and displeased that Lord and Miller were calling out lines for the actors to try from behind the monitor rather than sticking with the script that he had written in collaboration with his son. Eventually, however, Kennedy sent Kasdan to work with the pair on set, just as Tony Gilroy had done with Gareth Edwards during the extensive Rogue One reshoots. The performance is even being compared to Jim Carrey's Ace Ventura. As THR notes, hiring an acting coach is a thing, but doing so that late is production is odd.

While production for Star War: Han Solo resumes on July 10th, it begs the question whether or not Ron Howard will replace Alden Ehrenreich or if the movie will continue with Ehrenreich playing Han Solo.

Watts also commented on the "culture clash" that occurred between Lord and Miller and Kennedy, something he luckily didn't experience while directing Spider-Man: Homecoming and entering into the MCU. Again, all of these bits of juicy gossip news are unconfirmed, but it makes the behind the scenes troubles that much more fascinating.

We'll keep you posted on any new developments should they come up. While fans will likely keep discussing the behind-the-scenes drama on Han Solo until the movie hits theaters next May, Kevin Feige adds that none of this will matter if the movie is good.
