Iran calls missile attack on Syria militants a wider warning

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed to have launched six missiles from Iran into Deir ez-Zor in eastern Syria, where US-backed troops are combating ISIS, in an effort to show the United States that Iran is not going to accept United States sanctions against it.

On Sunday, a U.S. F-18 Super Hornet shot down a Syrian government SU-22 drone after it dropped bombs near troops from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which are now moving towards Raqqah, Daesh's Syrian stronghold. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters.

It said around 2 million children from Syria live as refugees in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, adding pressure on already stretched support systems. Ya'ari said they were a development of the Fateh missile type. The truce was meant to be extended but now appears to have collapsed.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says it was extended 24 hours.

Iran has been battling ISIS in Syria for years, offering military assistance to the Assad government through the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and its Hezbollah offshoot.

"The situation is back as it was in Daraa city and fighting is ongoing", said Daraa-based opposition activist Ahmad al-Masalmeh.

Since the early days of Syria's Civil War, there have been hawks viewing it as a potential proxy war against a key Iranian ally, and that view has only grown, which combined with the Trump Administration's general hostility toward Iran, is pushing the USA into widening their involvement in Syria. Iran's last foreign missile strike is believed to have been carried out in April 2001, targeting an exiled Iranian group in Iraq.

The Guard said the strike was "in retaliation" for June 7 attacks in Tehran that killed 17 people in the first IS-claimed operations in the country.

Neither official could say for sure whether either of the two drones that the US has shot down in southern Syria flew out of that base, but both said it was likely. They will reveal the location of missile sites and will provide details about the actual missiles.

Contrary to the prime minister, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Israel was not anxious by the Iranian strike.

The United States is leading a coalition of nearly 70 nations fighting against the terrorist group in Syria and Iraq.

This move has also effectively encircled FSA-controlled desert territory stretching to the Jordanian and Iraqi borders and close to the Tanf garrison where US forces are based.

The IRGC also said the missile strike killed a "large number" of terrorists and destroyed their supplies, warning it would launch similar assaults in Syria if additional Islamic State attacks occurred in Iran.
