With the new additions, the total number of cities to be made smart has reached 90. The proposed investment in these 30 cities is Rs 57,393 crore.

The total budget of the Smart City project has now rose to nearly Rs two lakh crore for 90 cities.

The workshop, organised on the second anniversary of Smart City announcement, saw presentations by Udaipur, Surat, Bhubhaneshwar, Kakinada, Indore and Pune.

He said the mission cities are choosing relatively small areas to start with for addressing infrastructure deficit.

In terms of population, people residing in an area chosen for development account for 85 percent of the total city population in Dharmashala, 38 percent in Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh and 33 percent in Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.

Referring to reports that maximum funds are being allocated to a small part of a city areas under the plan, Naidu said the citizens and city governments proposed the projects for fixing the infrastructure deficit in their respective cities.

All 30 cities will put in place integrated command and control centres that enable coordination among various agencies for better service delivery and effective management of scarce resources such as water and power, Naidu said.

He said, there will be no compromise in selection of cities and quality of smart city plans.

It will be recalled here that initially, the Dehradun smart city proposal was based on greenfield area development concept which was stated to be the cause of its failure in the first round as all the proposals based on greenfield area development were rejected in the initial round during February 2016.

The Minister denied that the Smart City Mission is only a playground for global technology players.

BMC Commissioner Ajoy Mehta had informed Naidu last month that Mumbai would not participate in the mission, according to The Indian Express. However, the work was later reassigned to Support Programme for Urban Reforms (Spur) of urban development and housing department.
