Rep. Scalise was shot during baseball practice with the GOP team early Wednesday morning after a man approached the field and opened fire.
In critical condition and undergoing repeated surgery, GOP House Whip Steve Scalise faces a "much more difficult" struggle to recover from his gunshot wound than first thought, President Donald Trump said Thursday.
Congressman Steve Scalise has improved in the last 24 hours, according to officials at the Medstar Washington Hospital where the Majority Whip is being treated.
Interest in the charity baseball game has skyrocketed in the aftermath of the shooting, as staffers and lawmakers look to rally around Scalise and the three others who were shot: a congressional staffer, a lobbyist and a Capitol Police special agent.
Sava declined to put a timeline on when that would happen, or when Scalise, 51, would be able to leave the hospital. According to the hospital, he sustained a single shot to his left hip, with the bullet traveling across his pelvis causing bone fractures, internal organ injury and severe bleeding. The hospital also said it will continue to provide periodical updates. Because the bullet shattered, there may be hundreds of fragments in Scalise's body and doctors do not intend to try to remove them all, Sava said.
Several people were injured, including Rep. Scalise. "I think that his risk of death right now is substantially lower than when he came in. he was as critical as you can be when he came in".
Hospital officials said it is hard to predict how long the congressman will be in the hospital, but that he is expected to be able to walk and hopefully run after a period of rehabilitation.
Cristiano Ronaldo starts but Portugal held by Mexico in Confederations Cup
The team said that he couldn't go because he was receiving post-game treatment, although it said it wasn't anything serious. Hector Moreno scored in added time to earn a point for the Mexicans five minutes after Cedric put the Portuguese in front.
Blast hits kindergarten in China, casualties unknown
The attack occurred at 4:50 p.m. local time as parents were waiting to pick up their children at the end of the school day. In January a man armed with a kitchen knife wounded 11 children at a kindergarten in southern China.
Washington tunes in for Congressional Baseball Game
Speaking earlier Friday in Miami, Trump said Scalise "took a bullet for all of us" when he was shot. Two officers were shot, as were congressional aide Zach Barth and lobbyist Matt Mika.
Scalise had been at "imminent risk of death" when he was first brought into the hospital on Wednesday, and he received many units of transfused blood, Sava said.
"I hope he's in good enough shape to watch, because he'll certainly feel good about what he sees", Flake said.
Sava said he told Scalise's family that "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his back yard with his family".
Investigators studying Wednesday's attack at a suburban Virginia park said Thursday that Hodgkinson had obtained his rifle and handgun from licensed firearms dealers.
His social media contained anti-Trump and anti-Republican posts. Republicans and Democrats sat in different parts of the park - fans could state their party preference when buying tickets. "The Congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time".
Hodgkinson also contacted the office of Rep. Mike Bost, R-Ill., at least 10 times over the past year, a Bost spokesman has said, characterizing the emails and phone calls as negative but not threatening.
The mood at the Capitol remained somber Thursday, as members learned more about Scalise's condition and signed giant "get well" posters for him and others injured.
