Will Trump Testify? Comey's Senate Hearing May Have Started A Chain Reaction

In a press conference in the Rose Garden on Friday, Trump suggested that Comey lied under oath when he told the Senate Intelligence Committee about Trump's Flynn request.

Comey also explained why he recorded his private talks with the USA president, saying that he was afraid Trump might "lie" about them. "I'll tell you about that maybe sometime in the near future", Trump said. Trump said "no" when asked if he demanded a loyalty pledge from Comey.

Trump: And there'd be nothing wrong if I did say it, according to everybody that I've read today.

Comey said he believed Trump fired him because of the Russian Federation investigation, and Trump himself cited "this Russian Federation thing" as a motivating factor for his decision to sack Comey during an interview with broadcaster NBC that aired last month. Asked directly whether he was recording conversations in the Oval Office - a claim he hinted at on Twitter last month - Trump dodged.

Trump added that, "You're going to be very disappointed" with his answer - not saying either way whether the tapes existed or not.

Shortly after the press conference, leaders of the House Intelligence Committee said they had asked the White House whether there were any such tapes.

But Trump refrained from confirming that he had records of conversations with Comey as he previously implied.

Trump also accused Comey of providing a false account of the "loyalty pledge" incident.

In his testimony, Comey said that after he was sacked and Trump's May 12 tweet, he gave the memos to Richman with the intent that they be leaked to the media. "That was an excuse by the Democrats, who lost an election that some people think they shouldn't have lost".

Susan Collins (R-Maine), a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, on Sunday demanded that if President Donald Trump continues to suggest that he has recordings of his conversations with fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, he should either "voluntarily turn them over" or receive a subpoena.

Comey claimed he leaked the notes calculating that publication of a story would trigger calls for an independent special prosecutor, which ultimately happened.

The former FBI chief described being pressured by Trump to end the FBI's investigation of Russian contacts by Michael Flynn, who had briefly served as White House national security advisor. It is likely that he will answer questions about the committee's investigation of Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election.
