No reason to fire special counsel: US Justice Dept

Tonight we have some breaking news about the investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 USA elections.

The letter said the investigation will also probe Comey's testimony that Loretta Lynch, as President Barack Obama's attorney general, had directed him to describe an FBI probe into Hillary Clinton's email practices as merely a "matter" and to avoid calling it an investigation. Devlin Barrett is one of The Post reporters on the story and joins us now.

Sessions' testimony came in the wake of fired FBI Director Comey's assertion that he believed he was sacked by Trump as part of an effort to influence the agencies' investigation into Russia's meddling in the presidential polls.

"According to published media reports and near unanimity of those who know both, Mueller enjoys an "unusual friendship" with Comey in their closeness", he wrote.

Chairman Chuck Grassley has emerged as an aggressive force, pressing for Comey's written notes of his conversations with Trump and leaving the door open Tuesday to a possible obstruction of justice probe.

He also testified he had told the President in January he was not personally under investigation.

SHAPIRO: And so the question would be, was the dismissal of Comey meant to obstruct the investigation into possible collusion or Russian meddling in the 2016 campaign? She said it was inappropriate to fire Comey given that he was overseeing the Russian Federation investigation.

He cautioned, however, that "there's been no findings of guilt on any of these things, but this is a major turning point in what Mueller and the special counsel is doing".

At a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing last week, Coats and Rogers refused to answer whether Trump asked them to intervene in the investigation.

It all apparently was prompted by speculation - many months ago - from former CIA Director John Brennan that someone connected to Trump's campaign may have had interactions with Russian officials. Given the vitriolic hatred Dems have for Trump, how can they possibly be objective when investigating him?

Top House GOP leaders appeared frustrated at the news conference about the multiple questions about Mueller's probe and what might happen if he were forced out of his position. Nearly half of Americans say they're very concerned.

A spokesman for Trump's personal lawyer in the Russian Federation matter Marc Kasowitz said, "The FBI leak of information regarding the President is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal".

Comey said he believed Mueller would look into Trump for obstruction of justice.

"No, I have not", Rosenstein said.

SHAPIRO: Just briefly, if the special counsel concludes the president did obstruct justice, could charges be brought against him? The Justice Department has denied that, saying Sessions stressed to Comey the need to be careful about following appropriate policies.

Several of Mueller's staffers are Democrats who have donated to various leftist politicians.

Shortly after the Washington Post story was published, a Republican National Committee memo about how to respond to the allegations was leaked to Phillip Rucker, the Post's White House bureau chief.

BARRETT: Thank you, Ari.
