MI native Matt Mika out of surgery, in ICU


Scalise was shot in the hip; his office says the lawmaker was in stable condition and undergoing surgery at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

Matt Mika, a lobbyist for Tyson Foods and a former aide to Republican U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg, was shot in the chest and arm during the attack Wednesday in Alexandria, Virginia.

Mika was wounded Wednesday when a gunman opened fire at a baseball practice, injuring a congressman and others.

Derek Burleson with Tyson Foods has confirmed that the name of the Tyson employee who was injured in this morning's shooting is Matt Mika.

Mika's family released a statement Thursday saying Mika suffered "massive trauma", needs breathing assistance and will need more surgery. "Our family continues to be in shock, and we ask for privacy while we focus on Matt and his care", the family said.

The congressman said Mika's status as an "overachiever" goes back to his days playing football and baseball at Michigan's Adrian College.

U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee of Genesee County was at a different baseball practice for Democrats.
